THAILAND MEKONG GIANT CATFISH

THAILAND MEKONG GIANT CATFISH
A handout photo released by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) on 28 July 2010 shows a Giant Mekong Catfish caught by Thai fishermen at Chiang Khong city along the Mekong River, Chiang Rai province, northern Thailand, on 01 May 2005. The Mekong giant catfish, Pangasianodon gigas or pla buek (huge fish) in Thai, can grow up to three metres long and weigh up to 300 kilograms. It is known to migrate hundreds of kilometres from the Tonle Sap Lake in Cambodia to spawn near Chiang Khong, northern Thailand, passing through Xayaburi province, in northern Laos, on the way. While Laos's and its Thai partners decision to build the Xayaburi hydro-power dam on the Mekong River are proceeding with the dam's construction, to be completed in 2019, is bad news for the normal sex life of the giant catfish, one of the world's largest freshwater fish. In the Mekong, its numbers have declined by 90 percent over the past 50 years, due mainly to overfishing, according to Zeb Hogan, a large fish expert at the University of Nevada, USA, who has done extensive research and field studies on the giant catfish. The governments of Cambodia and Vietnam, which lie downstream of Xayaburi, have called for an indefinite postponement of the 3.5 billion US dollar dam, the first to be built on the Lower Mekong, until thorough studies have been conducted on the project's potential impact on fish migration and sediment flows in the river
