Facing a period of starvation in the winter of 1609-1610 when about 80 percent of the colonists died, some apparently tried to dig into the brain of a child who had already died, said anthropologists at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. The girl's skull showed signs of awkward attempts to extract the brain matter, said Douglas Owsley, the Smithsonian forensic anthropologist who analyzed the skull and tibia of the girl who came to Virginia from England. "The desperation and overwhelming circumstances faced by the James Fort colonists during the winter of 1609-1610 are reflected in the postmortem treatment of this girl's body," said Owsley.

To mark 100 years of Indian Cinema, a Marathi film "Touring Talkies" is being screened in a makeshift tent theatre just like the days of yore, in its pre-multiplex and pre-single screen glory dating back 50 years. The tents, keeping in mind modern audiences, will have plush seating, air conditioning and popcorn and cola alongside fresh sugar-cane juice, roasted groundnuts and gram and pickle and other tit-bits. The cinema will screen four shows per day for a week. The idea of touring talkies was the brainchild of the doyne of Indian cinema, Dadasaheb Phalke, after he saw the British watching movies in tents. The touring cinema would travel through rural India and screen movies in makeshifts tents. At present, one can only find these talkies - whose sweltering tents and basic facilities contrast with the plush, air-conditioned multiplexes springing up in Indian cities, during Jatras (village fairs) in the interiors of the state.

Snow has covered much of the desert since a storm blew through the area on Dec. 26. The day after the storm, Chinese Central Television (CNTV) reported that the Xinjian Uygyr autonomous region was one of the areas hardest hit. The Taklimakan is one of the world’s largest—and hottest—sandy deserts. Water flowing into the Tarim Basin has no outlet, so over the years, sediments have steadily accumulated. In parts of the desert, sand can pile up to 300 meters (roughly 1,000 feet) high. The mountains that enclose the sea of sand—the Tien Shan in the north and the Kunlun Shan in the south—were also covered with what appeared to be a significantly thicker layer of snow in January 2013.
