CHINA HONG KONG ENDANGERED SEAHORSES
Dried seahorses are seen in a Chinese medicine shop in Sheung Wan, Hong Kong, China, 29 August 2013. Apart from their use as a supposed aphrodisiac and cure for male impotence, the seahorse is commonly found in traditional Chinese medicine as an unproven cure for kidney problems, memory loss, inflammation, antenatal ailments, arthritis and breast cancer. Due to the massive growth and industrialisation of China, coupled with modern fishing techniques, dried seahorses are now widely available in supermarkets and pharmacies right across China, including Hong Kong. This has led to a depletion of sea horses from China’s territorial waters, which in turn has meant that the species is now mostly imported to China from Vietnam, the Philippines, India and Africa. Scientists estimate that tens of millions of seahorses are killed each year for Chinese aphrodisiacs, and also warn that unless the species gains protection at international level, the seahorse looks set to head towards extinction. Attempts to commercially farm seahorses have so far proved unsuccessful.

Air India’s inaugural flight from New Delhi to Sydney receiveS a water salute after landing in Sydney on August 30, 2013. The Dreamliner (Boeing 787) jet arrived in Australia for the first time, courtesy of Air India which resumed direct services to the country after a 16-year absence. The carrier is hoping to take advantage of what it called the "untapped potential" in the Australian market.
